INFRASTRUCTURE issues have emerged as a central concern among voters in the Ayer Kuning state constituency, as campaigning for the upcoming by-election reaches its fifth day.
Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir revealed that complaints from constituents have mainly centred on the condition of local roads and inadequate drainage systems throughout the area.
“I have taken note of all these complaints and will do my best to resolve them in the future,” he told reporters during a walkabout at the Jualan Sejahtera Rakyat community sales programme in Ayer Kuning today.
He added that he intends to continue his door-to-door campaign to personally engage with voters and better understand their concerns.
The Ayer Kuning by-election was triggered by the passing of incumbent assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin on 22 February due to a heart attack.
The contest has drawn three candidates: Dr Mohamad Yusri representing BN, Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional (PN), and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
The Election Commission has set polling day for 26 April, with early voting scheduled for 22 April.
Despite the competitive three-way race, infrastructure remains a dominant theme among campaign discussions, particularly in rural parts of the constituency where voters say roads are poorly maintained and drainage systems frequently overflow during heavy rains.
As candidates intensify their campaigns, local development and the delivery of basic services have become key battlegrounds, with residents hoping that the newly elected representative will prioritise long-standing infrastructural deficits. – April 16, 2025
