GEORGE TOWN – The Marine Department will investigate the encroachment by the MV Fire Man Zanzibar firefighting tugboat that docked at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) recently.

In a statement, the department said as the designated authority (DA), it has ordered a detailed investigation to establish the root cause of the incident after the crew members received treatment at Seberang Jaya Hospital.

The department received information through a December 11 security incident report from the marine facility security officer (MFSO) at NBCT.

The Iranian vessel has been directed by the DA to be placed far from the terminal area, complying with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code to avoid being a security threat to other ships.

The boat was towed to the Prai wharf, with periodic control from NBCT’s auxiliary police.

The DA also requested that a weekly report be sent by the MFSO at the Marine Department headquarters in Port Klang, and copies to be sent to the MFSO at the Penang Port Commission and Northern Region Marine Department director.

The shipping community will be informed about the progress of the investigation from time to time, said the statement. – The Vibes, December 21, 2020
