PBS, STAR never thought of leaving GRS, says its information chief

PBS and STAR have no plans to leave Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), according to GRS information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

He said that the idea of either party abandoning the Sabah-based coalition had never arisen when responding to speculations raised in a media report quoting political analysts. 

“The thought of leaving GRS has never even crossed our minds,” said Jonistorn, who is also PBS Information Chief and Kiulu Assemblyman.

He questioned the logic of realigning with other political groups.

“Why abandon something that you helped build, only to align with others that are similar in form but not necessarily in vision or mission?”

He said there was no internal pressure to exit GRS and denied any rift within the coalition.

“It’s normal for such questions to surface, but the reality is, there’s no internal push for separation. In fact, we’re doubling down on cooperation.”

He added that any breakaway would be politically irrational.

“The idea that PBS or STAR would abandon GRS just doesn’t hold water. If anything, we are moving forward with greater determination to deliver results under GRS.”

Joniston said speculation would increase as the state election approaches but insisted that the priority remains clear.

“The priority now is to consolidate GRS’s message, ensure continuity in our policies, and prove that we deserve the people’s trust for another mandate.” - April 30, 2025
