SARAWAK will implement proficiency tests for English and Bahasa Malaysia languages for all Primary 6 pupils starting October this year.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said a decision was made by the State Cabinet.

"All Primary 6 students in Sarawak will be required to undergo proficiency tests for the dual languages of BM and English.

"The BM proficiency tests will be based on the Malaysian Ministry of Education standard and the English tests will be based on the Cambridge University standard of the UK.

"We have already secured a deal with Cambridge University," he said.

Abang Johari was on a working visit to Cambridge as part of the state official trade mission to the United Kingdom.

He said the Sarawak Ministry of Education and Talents Innovation will liaise with Cambridge soon.

"We are implementing this dual language proficiency tests to create future workers who are able to learn science and technology subjects of international standards," he said.

On Apr 30, it was announced that Sarawak is going big in its venture into the artificial intelligence sectors to diversify from its traditional revenue earners from logging and oil and gas sectors.

Abang Johari said Sarawak is entering into strategic partnerships with the United Kingdom in the use of AI for the electronics and digital sectors. – May 2, 2025
