THE reappointment of Tan Sri Azam Baki as Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is a strategic decision crucial to maintaining the country’s anti-corruption momentum, according to Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW).
In a statement today, MCW president Jais Abdul Karim said that as corruption grows increasingly complex, continuity in leadership at the MACC is vital to sustain the progress made in investigations, prosecutions, and integrity-building efforts across both the public and private sectors.
“MCW believes this extension also offers an important opportunity to groom future leaders within the MACC,” he said.
“It allows potential successors to gain hands-on experience, understand the intricacies of managing integrity-related crises, and deal with the internal and external pressures that come with leading an anti-corruption enforcement agency.”
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar had earlier announced that His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, had consented to Azam’s reappointment for a further one-year term, effective 13 May.
Azam, 62, has now been reappointed twice, first from 12 May 2023 to 11 May 2024, and again from 12 May 2024 to 12 May 2025.
Jais expressed confidence that the MACC, under Azam’s continued leadership, would be further strengthened through robust policy backing, administrative reforms, and strategies grounded in integrity, transparency, and accountability. - May 10, 2025
