PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysian youth to rise as catalysts for reform and national progress, calling them the heartbeat of the nation’s future on the occasion of National Youth Day.
In a message marking the annual National Youth Day celebration, Anwar emphasised the importance of courage, idealism and a sense of justice in shaping a more equitable and competitive Malaysia.
“Young people are the pulse of Malaysia’s future. With your spirit, courage and ideals, you are the engine driving a more just, prosperous and competitive nation,” said the Prime Minister.
He underscored the role of youth as agents of change, especially in confronting contemporary challenges and addressing societal concerns.
“You must emerge as agents of change. Channel your energy and expertise to tackle the people’s issues, reject abuse of power, and stand firm for truth and justice,” he said.
Anwar also urged youth to resist distractions that divide society and to focus on purposeful action.
“Malaysia needs youth who are informed, principled and visionary—not those caught up in trivial polemics that fracture our unity.”
The Prime Minister reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment, from education and employment to innovation and leadership development.
“The government is committed to empowering youth: from education to employment, from innovation to leadership. The future of the country is built alongside a courageous and principled generation.”
“Keep moving forward. The future of Malaysia begins with you,” Anwar added.
PM Outlines Malaysia’s ASEAN Vision in Russia
Separately, Anwar who is on an official visit to Russia till Friday, delivered a keynote address at the prestigious Moscow State Institute of International Relations University (MGIMO), marking a significant moment in Malaysia-Russia diplomatic engagement.
In his lecture titled “ASEAN in a Multipolar World: Perspectives from Malaysia”, Anwar offered a Malaysian view on regional cooperation and multilateralism amid shifting global dynamics.
Following his address, the Prime Minister was conferred an honorary doctorate by MGIMO in recognition of his contributions to international peace and the strengthening of global cooperation.
The event formed part of Anwar’s four-day official visit to Russia, which has included high-level engagements and economic outreach. After wrapping up the Moscow leg of the visit, the Malaysian delegation proceeded to Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Upon arrival in Kazan, Anwar was scheduled to meet Rais (Head) of the Republic of Tatarstan, before visiting the historic Kazan Kremlin – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that reflects the region’s rich Islamic and Russian heritage. The site includes architectural and archaeological complexes such as fortifications, the Governor's Palace, and the Syuyumbeki Tower.
Tatarstan, one of Russia’s wealthiest federal republics, is a key energy and industrial hub. As of 2021, around 54 percent of its population are Sunni Muslim Tatars.
Later in the day, Anwar was due to tour the Kazan Expo and Russia’s halal trade exhibition, part of the Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum 2025. The event includes the Kazan Halal Market and showcases innovation and halal-oriented businesses from over 150 producers, with around 20 companies focused on export.
The republic is a major exporter of refined petroleum (US\$4.28 billion), crude oil (US\$3.84 billion), synthetic rubber (US\$1.06 billion), nitrogen fertilisers (US\$202 million), and seed oils (US\$196 million).
The Prime Minister is also expected to attend a gala reception in conjunction with the 16th edition of the International Economic Forum *Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum 2025*, before concluding his visit on Friday. - May 15, 2025
