THE Malaysian government has secured RM11 billion worth of defence acquisitions, upgrades and strategic partnerships during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA’25), marking a significant boost to national security preparedness.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced the figure on Thursday, noting that it comprises 85 Letters of Acceptance (SSTs) and contracts, two Letters of Intent (LOIs), and six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

“These acquisitions span a wide range of defence needs, including land, air and maritime assets, cybersecurity, as well as improvements to military welfare. It is a clear reflection of the government’s commitment to strengthening our national defence,” he said at a press briefing.

The total marks an increase from the RM10.1 billion signed at LIMA 2023, which involved only 43 documents.

Key procurements include an LOI with Mildef International Technologies Sdn Bhd for 136 Armoured Vehicle Type A (Kenderaan Perisai Jenis A) units and related infrastructure worth RM1.88 billion, and another LOI with Lumut Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (LUNAS) valued at RM800 million.

In addition to the purchase of new assets, the Defence Ministry also signed contracts for the maintenance and upgrade of existing systems. These include RM1.02 billion for the upkeep of the Perdana Menteri-class submarines and RM187 million for enhancements to the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s F/A-18D fighter jets.

Strategic MoUs were also inked, notably with Boustead Technology Sdn Bhd to advance military communications through the integration of satellite systems and defence technology.

“Such collaborations will help us build domestic capability and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers,” Khaled noted.

The defence package also includes provisions for service member welfare, such as the construction of a new RM320 million Armed Forces Hospital at Terendak Camp.

The initiatives reflect a holistic approach to defence, combining operational readiness with long-term investment in local defence industries and personnel welfare. - May 22, 2025
