MALAYSIA is setting a robust agenda for its chairmanship of ASEAN this year, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim outlining an ambitious strategy centred on stronger economic integration, trade expansion, and cross-border energy connectivity.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya on Saturday ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Anwar said Malaysia intends to steer the regional bloc “beyond its traditional role as a neutral platform towards becoming a more cohesive, values-driven force in the Indo-Pacific.”
“As part of our thrust this year, we are focusing on strengthening ASEAN's cohesiveness, increasing economic interest and trade, and boosting investments among member countries,” he told editors-in-chief from both local and international media.
Anwar’s remarks come amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific, with Malaysia positioning ASEAN as a unified voice that can navigate complex global dynamics while advancing regional interests.
In support of the upcoming summit, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that over 1,200 media personnel have registered to cover the event, including more than 500 from international news agencies—a figure he said reflects strong global media interest.
Set for 26 and 27 May, the 46th ASEAN Summit will be guided by the theme Inclusivity and Sustainability. It marks Malaysia’s fifth time at the helm of the bloc, following previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. - May 23, 2025
