A 78-YEAR-OLD woman was killed after being attacked by a crocodile while collecting snails with her son at a tributary connected to Sungai Suai in Batu Niah, Sarawak today.
The incident occurred at about 11am when Sambai Anggah was attacked by the reptile while she was in a boat, while her son was in the river about a metre from where the attack took place.
Niah Fire and Rescue Station operation commander PBK II Azlan bin Azaman said the department received an emergency call at 11.26am before five firefighters were dispatched to the scene in a Fire and Rescue Tender (FRT).
“Based on the information received, the victim and her son were collecting snails in the river when she was suddenly attacked by a crocodile,” BH quoted him saying.
Azlan said the victim’s son, who was about a metre from the scene, witnessed the reptile attack his mother while she was in the boat.
“The crocodile then dragged the victim about 10 metres from the boat before releasing her after villagers surrounded it.
“The victim was later found floating in the water by villagers and brought to the jetty.
“However, she was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was handed over to the police for further action,” he said. - August 11, 2026
