PKR SETIAWANGSA chief, Datuk Afdlin Shauki Aksan has expressed his willingness to work with Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad towards a new and more progressive political culture in this country.

“Democracy is not just a system of government, but a promise to the people that their rights will be protected and their voices will be heard.

"However, what is the point of democracy if justice is not upheld? Justice in politics, social and economics must be created in a balanced manner to ensure the country's smooth political process.

"Justice in politics provides equal space for all citizens regardless of background; social justice ensures that no group is marginalised, while economic justice guarantees the equitable distribution of resources so that wealth is not only enjoyed by certain groups," he said.

He said this when speaking during the debate session of the PKR national congress in Johor Bahru.

The director, actor and comedian defeated Nik Nazmi in the Branch level election last month.

Afdlin said that the main challenges currently are political instability, manipulation of information on social media, and non-transparent bureaucracy.

"A new political culture must be based on the principle of justice that begins with leaders with integrity and independent institutions, but without thorough action, changes will only occur on the surface, while the roots of the system remain fragile.

"Taking the example of Setiawangsa Branch, the local political landscape has changed since the Pakatan Harapan (PH) victory in 2018 and 2022, but the inclusive and harmonious approach continues to be maintained.

"We do not cut off comrades, but rather we strengthen each other with family brotherhood. This strength comes from the spirit of mutual understanding and respect," he said.

He added that justice is not a slogan but a necessity to ensure that democracy truly belongs to the people.

"Political reform continues by emphasising political education, administrative transparency and legal reform.

"This National Congress is the starting point towards a party that is more progressive, united and truly reflects the aspirations of the people," he said. – May 24, 2025
