A FOREIGN national has been arrested on suspicion of molesting a woman in the car park of a residential apartment complex in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

The alleged assault took place around 11.15pm on Sunday when the 38-year-old victim was in the parking area of the Desa Bestari flats, said Northeast District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad.

“The victim reported that she was groped on her chest by an unknown man,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

According to police, the 24-year-old suspect was swiftly apprehended at the scene by members of the public and subsequently handed over to law enforcement officers.

A video clip lasting one minute and 10 seconds has since gone viral, showing a man detaining the suspect, believed to be a Nepalese national, at the location shortly after the alleged incident.

“The suspect is currently in remand to assist with investigations under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty,” said Abdul Rozak.

He added that police are in the final stages of completing the investigation file, which will soon be referred to the Penang State Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.

In the same statement, Abdul Rozak extended his appreciation to the members of the public who acted swiftly to restrain the suspect.

“This kind of cooperation is vital in maintaining public safety and ensuring swift justice,” he said. -June 5, 2025
