BUKIT Aman narcotics police are investigating possible local syndicate links after a Chinese national was arrested in Hong Kong with two kilogrammes of suspected cocaine allegedly obtained in Penang.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the department was liaising with Hong Kong authorities to obtain further information, including details of any syndicate members operating in Malaysia.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the 25-year-old suspect obtained the drugs from an unidentified individual at a supermarket in Penang, Hussein said.
The suspect was arrested by Hong Kong’s Customs and Excise Department on Oct 22 after arriving from Penang on Cathay Pacific flight CX622. The suspected cocaine was found in his checked luggage.
“The suspect is believed to have been in Malaysia for three days and was promised a reward of 2,000 renminbi (about RM1,223) for his involvement in the drug-related operation,” Hussein said when contacted today.
He said checks showed that the suspect’s passport had been issued only in October and contained no other travel records. The suspect had also made several hotel bookings despite his believed short stay in Malaysia.
It was earlier reported that the man was charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs and is scheduled to appear before the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts.
Under Hong Kong law, drug trafficking carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of HK$5 million upon conviction.
“The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department will continue to liaise with the Hong Kong authorities to obtain further details on developments in the case, including information on syndicate members who may be operating in Malaysia,” Hussein said.- October 26, 2026
