MCA will decide within the next two days whether to contest the Melaka state election after a dispute over seat allocation escalated at Barisan Nasional’s candidate announcement.
Party president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong told the New Straits Times that MCA leaders had attended the event expecting only the launch of BN’s election machinery, but found that candidates were also being unveiled.
The party had yet to submit its nominees.
Wee said MCA was informed on Thursday that it would be allocated two seats, both of which it won in the 2021 state election. The party had contested seven seats in that election.
He said MCA had objected to the proposed allocation and was told the matter would be discussed.
The decision to proceed with the candidate announcement nevertheless left the party questioning how the coalition had handled the negotiations.
Wee also pointed out that MCA had not faced similar problems during elections in Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
The party will now consider its next move, with its leadership expected to meet within the next two days to decide whether it will field candidates in Melaka.
Earlier today, BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said negotiations over MCA’s candidate list remained open. - October 25, 2026
