A POST-mortem on a 42-year-old man who died after being taken to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM (HCTM) while in police custody found no injuries to his internal organs, although several external injuries were noted.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Aida Abdul Hamid said the cause of death had yet to be determined pending laboratory analysis.

“The cause of death is recorded as pending laboratory analysis,” she said in a statement today.

The man was arrested by Cheras district police on Sept 19 in connection with investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Sections 457 and 379 of the Penal Code.

He was referred to HCTM for treatment on Sept 30 and died at 1.52am the following day.

The case has been classified as sudden death, with JIPS Bukit Aman’s Custodial Death and Criminal Investigation Unit continuing its investigation.

Aida said investigators had recorded statements from 78 witnesses, including police officers, members of the public, medical personnel, forensic specialists, a representative of the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) and two members of the deceased’s family.

The case has also been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC), as required under Section 26 of the Independent Police Conduct Commission Act 2022 (Act 839).

Aida said the Royal Malaysia Police remained committed to transparency and accountability in investigating such cases, urging the public to refrain from speculation while inquiries were ongoing.

She said JIPS would not compromise on misconduct and would take action against any party found to have breached the law or regulations.

On Oct 17, media reports said a family member of the deceased had submitted a memorandum to the police calling for the case to be investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. - October 24, 2026
