A CHINESE tourist was found drowned while swimming alone at Perhentian Island on Thursday morning, police confirmed in a statement issued Friday.

The 33-year-old woman was discovered unconscious near a rocky area around 11.30 am by members of the public, according to Besut District Police Chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu.

“We received an emergency call through the Besut District Police Headquarters (IPD) Operations Room,” Sinar Harian quoted his saying.

Initial investigations revealed that the victim had arrived in Malaysia on 3 June and was staying at a hotel on the island with her cousin.

“On the day of the incident, the victim and her cousin went to the beach at around 11 am. The victim later went swimming alone and did not return,” Azamuddin said.

After more than 30 minutes had passed, her cousin became concerned and began searching for her. She was eventually found floating unconscious in a rocky area by members of the public.

“She was brought back to shore and police were contacted for further action,” he said.

A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death was drowning, and no signs of foul play were detected.

“This case has been classified as sudden death,” Azamuddin said, while advising the public to remain vigilant during recreational activities at sea.

He also urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could disrupt police investigations.

“Any information related to criminal activity can be reported to Besut District Police at 09-6956222,” he added. - June 6, 2025
