PENANG MIC wants the state to accord a 5% discount on selected public housing schemes for all local residents instead of just Muslims of Indian descent.
State chairperson Datuk J. Dhinagaran said that the recent announcement by the state housing committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo is lauded on extending a 5% discount to Indian Muslims but it is better if Penang can accord to all races and all faiths as a testament to the diversity in the state.
"While we sincerely appreciate the Sundarajoo's wise experience in housing development which has led to initiatives that ease the financial burden of homebuyers we strongly urge the government to extend this benefit to all eligible citizens across Penang.
“In the current challenging economic climate where the cost of living continues to rise; such initiatives should not be limited to specific groups or selected housing projects.
“Instead, the 5% discount should be available for all housing projects, giving every Penangite a fair and equal opportunity to own a home."
Furthermore, Penang MIC has called upon the Federal Government to consider implementing similar discount policies at the national level as housing affordability remains a major concern for many Malaysians.
"A nationwide scheme would offer meaningful support to the B40 and M40 income groups particularly young families striving for homeownership."
The state should review the decision made and expand the scope of this policy to all residents here, said Dhinagaran in a statement.
"It will ensure inclusivity, equity, and greater impact, enabling more people to benefit from the vision of affordable home ownership," he said.
An official with a developer here, said that the state needs to boost ownership of high - rise living, including condominiums and affordable apartments.
Although the developers have taken up the challenge to construct more affordable units, the take up rate remains sluggish due to the inability to receive financing approval, and the discerning attitude of some buyers, who prefer to be in some neighbourhoods due to the vicinity to work and leisure. - June 7, 2025
