THE death toll from the Air India crash near Ahmedabad’s airport on Thursday has risen to 274, with Indian authorities confirming that 33 of the victims were on the ground at the time of the accident, according to The Times of India on Saturday, citing reports from Xinhua.
The increase in fatalities beyond the 241 confirmed passengers and crew suggests that the additional casualties were located in the vicinity of BJ Medical College campus in Ahmedabad when the aircraft went down, the newspaper reported.
The aircraft, operating as flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad International Airport on 12 June. Only one person survived the disaster.
The Hindustan Times also reported on Saturday that the Indian government has formed a high-level committee to investigate the crash. A full report is expected within three months.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and officials have not yet released preliminary findings. - June 14, 2025
