WORKS Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has confirmed that "crocodile cracking" – a form of extensive road surface damage – was present at the scene of a fatal crash involving a Singaporean cyclist in Kulai, Johor.
The cyclist, a male national of Singapore, was killed after reportedly falling and being struck by a trailer along Jalan Gunung Pulai at approximately 9.45am on Saturday.
Nanta said the deteriorated state of state road J165 was likely caused by frequent usage by heavy vehicles, particularly lorries servicing a nearby quarry. Although earlier works had been undertaken to grade the road shoulder, the damage re-emerged due to excessive vehicle load.
“Although the road falls under the jurisdiction of the State Government, the Works Ministry (KKR) is concerned about its condition, which poses a risk to road users, including motorcyclists and cyclists,” Nanta said in a statement on Sunday.
As an immediate measure, Nanta said he had contacted the state authorities to ensure that pavement rehabilitation and road shoulder levelling works be implemented without delay, pending the approval of comprehensive repair funding.
He also called on all stakeholders involved in road maintenance, alongside members of the public and local communities, to work collaboratively in maintaining safe and high-quality road infrastructure to help prevent further accidents.
The minister also issued a safety advisory to cyclists, particularly those using public roads.
“Choose a suitable and safe time, such as early mornings on weekends, and always ensure the use of safety equipment, including helmets and reflective lights. Adhere to traffic regulations, avoid using mobile phones while cycling and make sure your bicycle is in good condition,” he said.
Nanta extended his condolences to the family of the victim and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to road safety. - June 15, 2025
