MINISTER of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad remains determined to resign from the Cabinet despite hopes by the Prime Minister that he would stay on.

Nik Nazmi said the decision was made based on greater considerations.

"The party's mandate is important for broad reforms.

"I do have the option to stay, but my choice is to resign," he said via Facebook.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Monday, when responding to Nik Nazmi's status in the Cabinet, announced that the former PKR Vice President's leave period would end this week.

However, he explained that no final decision had been made so far and the government was still giving Nik Nazmi the option to continue his duties.

Meanwhile, Nik Nazmi, through the same post, also quoted Jurgen Klopp's words when announcing his resignation as Liverpool manager, to describe the situation he is facing.

"I love this club completely... But when I still make this decision, it shows how convinced I am that this is what I need to do.

"That's how I feel," he said.

He also he shared a meeting with the Chairman of the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), Shareen Abdul Ghani, while he was cleaning his office last week.

"After we sat on the sofa in the Minister's Office, he asked, 'Is there another chance we can convince YB to change his mind?'

"I just smiled and looked around the office. Shareen followed my gaze - seeing empty shelves that were previously full of books, empty walls that were once hung with various pictures, paintings (and jerseys)," he said.

He added that it was not easy to leave the ministry.

"After two years, I consider the team at the Ministry, departments and agencies to have reached the level of a 'dream team' - with extraordinary commitment, ability and credibility," he said.

Nik Nazmi also recalled his involvement in a previous dialogue session with MGTC, which aimed to answer concerns regarding the direction of the agency.

"Hopefully MGTC will continue to lead the implementation of the climate change agenda towards the goal of Net Zero 2050," he said. - June 17, 2025
