DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke has questioned the legal basis for the Negeri Sembilan State Executive Council (Exco) members' decision to recognise a proclamation removing Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan and to acknowledge a successor with immediate effect.

The Seremban Member of Parliament described the decision as legally baseless and claimed it could be construed as an act of treason against the state's reigning Ruler.

In a statement today, Loke emphasised that an Exco decision cannot unilaterally override the Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959 or the rulings of the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang.

"I wish to question the Exco's authority to make such a decision," he said.

He also raised concerns regarding the actions of the Exco members, stating that they should have first understood the relevant legal provisions and the scope of their authority before making statements concerning the position of the reigning Ruler.

Anthony also touched upon the status of several newly appointed Exco members, noting that some had allegedly never attended a State Legislative Assembly sitting in their capacity as Exco members.

"If such an action had been taken by the Exco when Negeri Sembilan was governed by the Pakatan Harapan administration, those who habitually exploit 3R issues to blame DAP would certainly have condemned it vehemently," he remarked.

According to Anthony, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan cannot be arbitrarily removed without adhering to the legitimate processes stipulated in the Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan.

He claimed that the announcement regarding the removal not only caused confusion but also undermined state administrative decorum and tarnished the dignity of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

The Transport Minister also reminded everyone that the Executive Council (Exco) members in question had only just taken their oaths of office before Tuanku Muhriz in early August.

“If they no longer recognise His Royal Highness as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, then—based on principle and dignity—they ought to resign from their respective posts,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, DAP reiterated its stance on upholding the principles of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, as well as the supremacy of the law and the dignity of the royal institution.

Loke stated that these principles should not be messed with for the sake of any political or personal interests. – September 17, 2026
