A HUSBAND and wife were killed, and their three children seriously injured, after the family’s car veered off course and collided head-on with a lorry along Jalan Kuantan–Segamat near Kampung Batu Lapan, Lepar, on Tuesday night.

The deceased have been identified as Jamal Azizul Samat, 44, who was driving the vehicle, and his wife Lizawati Abdullah, 41. Both were from Felda Chini Timur 1 in Pekan.

Pekan District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin, said the incident occurred at approximately 10pm while the family was travelling from Kuantan towards Segamat.

“The vehicle driven by Jamal Azizul is believed to have lost control while overtaking another vehicle, before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with an oncoming lorry,” he said in a statement today.

Jamal Azizul and his wife were trapped in the driver and front passenger seats respectively and died at the scene due to their injuries.

“The couple’s three children, aged between six and 17, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Kuantan for further treatment,” he added.

The lorry driver, 31, and his two assistants sustained only minor injuries.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Pekan Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in death. - June 18, 2025
