Former Dewan Negara Deputy Speaker accused of accepting RM235,000 bribes, three luxury cars
A FORMER Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Negara was charged in the Shah Alam Sessions Court on 20 counts of accepting bribes totalling RM235,000 and three luxury cars in connection with a reclaimation project in Melaka.
The accused, Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, 61, pleaded not guilty after all charges were read out separately before Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud.
According to the charges, Mohamad Ali, as the managing director of a development company, was charged with 17 counts of accepting cash ranging from RM5,000 to RM20,000 with a total amount of RM235,000 from a director of another company with the title of Datuk.
For the other three charges, he is accused of receiving three luxury vehicles, a BMW 730Li, a Range Rover and a Bentley Flying Spur from the same individual.
This was as payment for appointing the company as a contractor to carry out construction and completion of reclamation works and all related work for the 'Proposed Sea Reclamation Project covering an area of 40.47 hectares in the waters of the Kota Laksamana Area, Melaka Tengah, Melaka worth RM45.1 million for mixed development purposes.
The offence was allegedly committed at two premises in Glenmarie and Sungai Buloh between January 2017 and January 20 this year.
Mohamad Ali is charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine.
In today's proceedings, MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib proposed bail of RM60,000 with one surety and the surrender of the accused's passport to the court.
The judge agreed on the bail amount and the surrender of the passport.
The court also prohibited the accused from interfering with prosecution witnesses.
The accused was represented by Md Yunos Shariff.
The court set July 24 for re-mention. - June 18, 2025
