THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has filed a notice of appeal against the decision by the Court of Appeal to acquit and discharge Muar Member of Parliament, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, of all four corruption-related charges linked to funds from the youth wing of Bersatu, Armada.
In a media statement issued on Thursday, the AGC confirmed the filing, stating: “This department has filed a notice of appeal today to appeal against the decision of acquittal and discharge.”
The AGC emphasised that the appeal forms part of Malaysia’s judicial process which allows for the review of decisions handed down by lower courts.
“This is a routine practice in the country’s legal process and does not reflect any prejudice against any party,” it added.
The Chambers further noted that the appeal seeks to ensure legal questions raised by the Court of Appeal’s decision are fully examined and conclusively determined by the Federal Court.
“Pemfailan rayuan ini bertujuan memastikan isu-isu perundangan yang timbul daripada keputusan Mahkamah Rayuan dapat diteliti dan diputuskan secara muktamad oleh Mahkamah Persekutuan, selaras dengan prinsip keadilan dan tadbir urus undang-undang yang telus,” it stated.
On Wednesday, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim and comprising Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin, allowed Syed Saddiq’s appeal and set aside his convictions and sentence.
The 33-year-old had previously been convicted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court of one count of abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million, one count of misappropriating RM120,000 in party funds, and two counts of money laundering, each involving RM50,000.
The High Court had sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine. - June 26, 2025
