THE main suspect in the murder of university student Maniishapriet Kaur, along with his girlfriend who is also the victim’s housemate, will be charged in court on Thursday.

Sepang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed in a statement that both suspects are expected to be brought before the Sepang Magistrates’ Court in the morning to face charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

“We have released the two other individuals arrested earlier, including one who was released at around 8.30am today,” he said on Wednesday.

Three individuals — one man and two women, all aged between 19 and 20 — were initially arrested within 48 hours of a police report lodged on 24 June. The arrests were made in separate operations in Johor Bahru and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan on 25 and 26 June respectively, with a fourth suspect detained the following day.

Maniishapriet, 20, from Kuching, Sarawak, was found dead in her hostel room at a private university in Cyberjaya at 10.28am on 24 June. She was believed to be alone in the room at the time of her death, as her five roommates had returned home for the holidays on 21 June.

The victim was reportedly preparing for an upcoming examination before the incident occurred. Following her death, police detained four individuals, including the main suspect, who is believed to be the boyfriend of one of the deceased’s housemates.

Police earlier confirmed that a pathology report found no signs of sexual assault. - July 9, 2025
