A man was apprehended by police yesterday in Tawau after exposing himself to a 15-year-old schoolgirl, having first pretended to ask for directions.

POLICE have arrested a man who indecently exposed himself to a female student, as confirmed by Tawau District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin. The suspect, in his 30s, was detained following a report filed by the 15-year-old victim.

According to Assistant Commissioner Jasmin, the incident occurred around 12:45 PM when the victim was walking home from school. She was approached by an unknown man driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

"The suspect initially asked the victim for directions before behaving inappropriately and exposing himself," he stated in a press release last night.

The startled victim immediately fled to a nearby residential area for her safety before reporting the incident to the police.

Assistant Commissioner Jasmin added that following the report, the suspect was located and arrested at a house in the Merotai area by a team from Bombalai Police Station at approximately 4:30 PM on the same day.

The suspect, along with the seized four-wheel-drive vehicle, was taken to the Tawau District Police Headquarters for further action.

"The case is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and whipping," he affirmed. - July 10, 2025
