MALAYSIA will present strong arguments underscoring the significance of its bilateral ties with the United States in ongoing discussions over reciprocal tariffs, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said on Wednesday.
He emphasised that the negotiations would be approached holistically, taking into account not only trade matters but also national sovereignty and the longstanding strategic relationship between the two countries.
“Trade negotiations between Malaysia and the United States regarding tariffs will take into account a broader scope, including sovereignty and shared interests between both nations,” he told reporters after a local welfare and education aid event in Rantau.
“We do not want these negotiations to damage our bilateral relationship.”
Mohamad, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Rembau, noted that Malaysia remains a strategic partner not only to the United States but to all nations, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving diplomatic ties during the tariff talks.
Too Early to Comment on Nick Adams' Nomination
On a separate matter, Mohamad said it was premature to comment on the nomination of Nick Adams as the prospective US Ambassador to Malaysia, as the appointment has yet to receive approval from the US Senate.
“It is still too early for me to speak on the matter,” he remarked briefly.
BN Yet to Decide on Solo Contest for Upcoming Election
Mohamad, who also holds the position of Deputy Chairman of Barisan Nasional (BN), added that the coalition has not reached a decision on whether it will contest independently in the upcoming general election.
