Govt strengthens sustainable water resource management through MYWATER 2025 Forum
Issues addressed include water distribution imbalances, water pollution, the need for early warning systems, and resilient groundwater management - July 22, 2025

THE Federal Government, via the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable management of the nation’s water resources through the upcoming Malaysia Water Forum (MYWATER) 2025, themed “Driving the Implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management.”

MYWATER 2025 serves as a strategic platform that brings together thinkers, practitioners, and leaders from various water-related sectors to assess current challenges and explore new opportunities in managing the country’s water resources.

Key issues addressed include water distribution imbalances, water pollution, the need for early warning systems, and resilient groundwater management.

“The implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) ensures the country’s water resources are managed sustainably, comprehensively, and inclusively, balancing the needs of multiple sectors including domestic, industrial, agricultural, and environmental,” PETRA said in a statement.

The forum aligns with global directions outlined in the Ministerial Declaration at the 10th World Water Forum in May 2024, which aims to secure sustainable water availability and sanitation for all through inclusive action, close cooperation, and innovation.

This reflects Malaysia’s dedication to aligning water management efforts with international agendas and strengthening regional and global collaboration on water issues.

PETRA emphasised that IWRM guarantees clean water supply, supports economic growth, reduces disaster risks, and enhances equitable access to water and sanitation.

It also aids in ecosystem preservation and pollution control through comprehensive and accountable water governance.

As a leading ASEAN country in Programme 1: Strategic Guidelines and National Indicator Framework for regional IWRM, Malaysia remains committed to monitoring regional strategy implementation, integrated reporting, capacity building for member states, and advancing Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and 17 (Global Partnerships).

“The ministry is devoted to achieving the IWRM targets under the 2040 Water Transformation Roadmap (AIR 2040), in line with the Malaysia MADANI concept, which emphasises sustainability, well-being, and responsiveness to the needs of the people,” PETRA added in a statement today. - July 22, 2025
