A BASE jumper was injured and two others escaped unharmed after veering off course during a stunt at Menara Kuantan 188 on Sunday afternoon, as part of the Kuantan 188 Festival.

Acting Kuantan District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud, said the incident occurred at around 5pm when participants were making jumps from the 104-metre-high tower.

"BASE jumper Zainal Chik, 62, was injured after crashing onto a concrete surface and is currently receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA). His condition is reported to be stable," he said in a statement today.

"An Australian national, Andrew Morcombe, 35, became entangled in a tree near the tower, while another Malaysian participant, Manan Mahusin, 64, landed in the Kuantan River during his descent.

"They were rescued by event staff and both were unharmed," he added.

Mohd Adli said preliminary investigations pointed to strong winds and technical factors during landing as the cause of the mishaps.

Seventeen participants, including five international jumpers, took part in the three-day stunt event which began on Saturday as part of the Kuantan 188 Festival. - July 26, 2025
