A POLICE officer was seriously injured while attempting to calm a mentally unstable man armed with a parang during an incident at a house in Felda Bukit Kuantan on Saturday afternoon.
Pahang Police Chief, Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, said the incident occurred at around 5.30pm after police received an emergency call via the Malaysian Emergency Response Services (MERS) 999 system, reporting the suspect’s aggressive behaviour.
Three officers from the Panching Police Station were dispatched to the scene. One of them, Corporal Mohd Shafril Izzwan Ismail, 37, was attacked by the suspect during the intervention.
“As a result, the victim sustained serious injuries to his back, chin and the fingers of his left hand,” Yahaya said in a statement on Sunday.
The injured officer was immediately taken to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA), where he is currently receiving treatment in the Yellow Zone.
Initial investigations revealed that the 37-year-old suspect is unemployed and believed to be suffering from mental illness. Police confirmed that the man has no prior criminal record.
“We have arrested the suspect and seized several bladed weapons at the scene,” said Yahaya. “The suspect has also been referred to the HTAA Psychiatric Ward for mental health evaluation.”
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using a weapon. - August 3, 2025
