THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from two individuals as part of an investigation into a viral video allegedly mocking the national anthem, “Negaraku”.

The individuals were questioned at MCMC’s headquarters in Cyberjaya on 12 August 2025, during which a mobile phone and a SIM card were seized for forensic examination.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the regulator said it would not compromise on acts that demean or ridicule the national anthem. “This is consistent with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, which requires every citizen to respect ‘Negaraku’,” it said.

MCMC reminded the public to treat the national anthem with due reverence as a symbol of loyalty and patriotism, and to refrain from posting or distributing content that could be deemed disrespectful.
