THE investigation into the tragic death of Zara Qairina Mahathir has extended beyond bullying to include allegations of neglect and sexual harassment, the Malaysian Home Minister confirmed in Parliament today.

Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said these additional elements were uncovered during the course of police investigations and had been incorporated into the final report submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC).

“School administrators must be reminded that when such incidents are brought to light, we will pursue them thoroughly. That is why our investigation went beyond bullying — which has now been completed — to also examine other elements,” he told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

“There is an element of neglect, as this young girl had lodged a complaint with the school, and we are investigating under that category as well. There is also an element of sexual harassment, which has likewise been investigated,” he added.

Zara Qairina's case has sparked national outrage and scrutiny of institutional accountability in educational settings. The investigation is part of wider efforts to determine not only the cause of her death but also whether school authorities failed to act on earlier warnings.

The AGC is now reviewing the report to determine if further legal action will be taken against individuals or institutions implicated in the findings. - August 18, 2025
