DISCUSSIONS on the MADANI Government’s efforts to uplift the socioeconomic standing of the Indian community and strengthen Malaysia’s defence posture is expected  to be raised in the lower house on Tuesday.

During Ministers’ Question Time, S. Kesavan (PH–Sungai Siput) asked the Prime Minister to detail the government’s initiatives – via the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA) or other agencies – to promote “holistic socioeconomic development” for the Indian community. Meanwhile, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN–Pasir Mas) sought clarification on Malaysia’s level of preparedness to confront “global and regional geopolitical challenges”.

Administrative and financial issues also featured prominently. Tan Hong Pin (PH–Bakri) pressed the Home Minister for updates on “11,000 pending citizenship applications”, and asked what short-term assistance was available for applicants who had been unsuccessful.

Lim Lip Eng (PH–Kepong) questioned the Higher Education Minister over enforcement actions regarding “400,000 National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers” who had defaulted on RM5 billion in loans over the past decade. He also queried whether “targeted loan waivers” were being considered for the hardcore poor.

Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN–Jempol) brought attention to the need for tighter regulation of artificial intelligence (AI), requesting that the Communications Minister outline any mechanisms in place to monitor AI technology.

He further asked if the government intended to introduce legislation to ensure “AI-generated or manipulated content” is clearly labelled.

Following the Q&A session, ministers began winding-up speeches on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), themed “Redesigning Development”. The plan, which was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on 31 July, earmarks RM611 billion for the 2026–2030 period.

The debate on the 13MP, which commenced on 4 August, drew contributions from 161 Members of Parliament over an eight-day stretch.

The current Dewan Rakyat sitting is slated to continue for  24 days, concluding on 28 August. - August 19, 2025
