THE mother of Zara Qairina Mahathir has filed a formal application to be recognised as an interested party in the upcoming inquest into the teenager’s death, seeking the right to participate actively in the proceedings.

In a statement dated 22 August 2025, the legal team representing Noraidah Lamat confirmed that the application was lodged on 19 August at the Coroner’s Court.

“On 19 August 2025, we filed an application in the Coroner’s Court for our client, Noraidah binti Lamat — mother of Zara Qairina binti Mahathir (Zara) — to be declared an interested party in the inquest proceedings concerning Zara’s death,” read the statement.

The application also seeks permission for Noraidah, through her legal representatives, to be fully involved in the inquest. This includes the ability to examine and cross-examine witnesses, access relevant documentation, and propose or produce additional witnesses and evidence to assist the Coroner in establishing the facts of the case.

“We have also requested that relevant documents from the Attorney General’s Chambers be provided to us prior to the commencement of the inquest proceedings,” the statement added.

The Coroner’s Court has set 28 August 2025 to hear the application.

The statement was jointly issued by solicitors Hamid Ismail, Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh and Farrah Nasser. - August 22, 2025
