RESIDENTS in Segamat were jolted early this morning by what many described as a loud bang followed by noticeable tremors, after a weak earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck the district at 6:13am.
Social media users, particularly on Facebook, recounted the sensation as resembling an explosion, with several posts from those living in Segamat describing the shaking and unsettling noise.
One post in the Komuniti Segamat group included an image showing minor damage inside a surau in Kampung Sanglang, Buloh Kasap, believed to have resulted from the tremor.
Many others took to social media to express concern and offer prayers for the safety of those in Segamat and nearby areas.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed that the epicentre of the quake was located five kilometres west of Segamat, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremors were felt across Johor, as well as parts of Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and southern Pahang.
The agency assured the public that there is no tsunami threat resulting from the incident and that monitoring efforts are ongoing.
Despite the widespread reports of shaking, authorities have yet to receive any formal reports of damage or injuries.
Rompin District Police Chief, Superintendent Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi, said that as of 10:00am, no complaints had been lodged at the four police stations closest to the Johor border—Cenderawasih, Bukit Ibam, Kota Bahagia and Muadzam Shah.
"Thus far, our stations have reported no noticeable tremors and have not received any official reports regarding damage or injury. Nonetheless, we continue to monitor the situation and gather feedback from residents," he said.
Similarly, the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that no reports of incidents had been received. Public Relations Officer Zulfadli Zakaria noted that both the Muadzam and Triang fire stations, the closest to the Johor border, were on alert but had not been called to respond.
"As of now, there are no reports of emergency incidents linked to the earthquake," he said when contacted.
While the tremor caused momentary alarm and online speculation, the situation remains under control.
Authorities continue to monitor developments and have urged the public to remain calm while staying alert for any official updates. - August 24, 2025
