THE Road Transport Department (JPJ) has confirmed that it has completed its investigation into the tragic bus accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on 9 June in Gerik, Perak.

The report has been submitted to the Ministry of Transport for further action and public disclosure.

Deputy Director-General (Planning and Operations) of JPJ, Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi, stated that the investigation’s findings are now in the hands of the ministry.

“The investigation into the UPSI bus crash that took the lives of 15 students has been presented to the ministry,” he said.

“The results are ready. As for further developments, they will be announced by the ministry,” he told reporters following the Semarak Merdeka 2025 programme at the JPJ enforcement station in Labok on Sunday.

The tragic incident occurred at KM53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik when a chartered tour bus carrying UPSI students veered off the road and collided with a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) before overturning. The crash resulted in 15 fatalities and left 33 others injured.

JPJ had earlier opened an investigation paper against the bus operator and leasing company over suspected violations of the Road Safety Audit (JISA) requirements.

These included failures in driver supervision, GPS tracking system monitoring, and compliance with regulations regarding drivers’ working and rest hours. - August 24, 2025
