MALAYSIA’S ageing population and a possible moratorium on residential developments in Kuala Lumpur are among the key matters set to be raised in today’s Dewan Rakyat sitting.
According to the Order Papers published on Parliament’s official website, Sim Tze Tzin (PH–Bayan Baru) will direct a question to the Minister of Economy during Ministers’ Question Time, seeking clarification on the government’s preparations for an ageing society. He will also ask for projections relating to births, deaths, marriages and general population growth over the next decade.
Meanwhile, Young Syefura Othman (PH–Bentong) is expected to ask the Prime Minister whether the government is considering a halt to new residential projects in Kuala Lumpur. She cited Department of Statistics data projecting that the capital will reach its peak population by 2031—some 28 years earlier than the national estimate.
In a separate matter, Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (PN–Tanah Merah) is set to question the Minister of Defence over the ownership of a new AW149 helicopter assembly facility, to be built by Italian defence firm Leonardo in Batu Berendam, Melaka, using public funds. He will seek clarity on whether the Ministry of Defence was consulted prior to the project’s approval.
Elsewhere, Wong Shu Qi (PH–Kluang) will ask the Prime Minister about the number of complaints received through the Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA) from 2018 to 30 June 2025, and the reasons why three particular agencies recorded the highest volume of grievances during that period.
Datuk Willie Mongin (GPS–Puncak Borneo) will seek the Foreign Minister’s latest assessment of ongoing armed conflicts in the Middle East and enquire whether Malaysia intends to recalibrate its foreign policy in the region to better safeguard economic, security and national interests.
Following the oral question session, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with the second readings of the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the National Registration (Amendment) Bill 2025.
The current Dewan Rakyat session, which began on 21 July, is scheduled to conclude on 28 August. - August 26, 2025
