MALAYSIA has reiterated its commitment to clean energy transition through technological innovation, regional collaboration, and AI integration during the 16th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) and 10th Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-10), held at BEXCO, Busan, Republic of Korea.
Leading the Malaysian delegation, Deputy Prime Minister II and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, participated in several high-level dialogues, including on Power Transformation and Energy & Artificial Intelligence (AI).
In his remarks at the Power Transformation session, the Deputy Prime Minister stated, “The innovative transformation of power systems is fundamental to advancing the clean energy transition. Without resilient, flexible, and modernised grid infrastructure, the full realisation of energy transition goals would not be possible.”
He added that Malaysia, through its National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), is targeting 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050, leveraging solar, hydro, green hydrogen and digital technologies for demand-side management.
He further underlined the importance of strengthening regional interconnectivity via the ASEAN Power Grid, which he described as “a critical driver of electricity supply security.”
During the session on Energy and Artificial Intelligence, Malaysia highlighted the growing role of AI in shaping energy systems. “AI has evolved from a conceptual notion to a tangible reality, shaping the planning, management, and transformation of energy systems,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He emphasised AI’s potential to improve system efficiency, reliability, and renewable energy integration through enhanced demand forecasting, while also acknowledging the energy-intensive nature of AI applications.
“If managed responsibly, AI could serve as an enabler for clean energy transition, while sustainable energy supply will form the foundation for the continued growth of AI technologies,” he added.
Malaysia also expressed support for the CEM-MI Agenda for Action, launched in Brazil in 2024, describing it as “a pivotal framework to drive collective action and accelerate clean energy infrastructure investments.”
“The success of this agenda requires close collaboration between governments and the private sector, anchored on clear policy direction, technological innovation, and sustainable financing,” the Deputy Prime Minister stated.
Malaysia’s involvement in the ministerial meetings aligns with the principles of Malaysia MADANI, which prioritises sustainability, innovation and societal well-being as part of a broader energy transition strategy.
In conjunction with the meetings, the Deputy Prime Minister also visited the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Saeol Nuclear Power Plant site. The visit enabled Malaysia to observe the latest developments in nuclear safety and explore avenues for cooperation in nuclear energy as a low-carbon power source to support national energy transition goals. - August 26, 2025
