A MALAYSIAN man was arrested by Thai authorities after he was found in possession of two military-grade M16 assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition at a roadblock in Sadao, Songkhla, yesterday.
According to reports, the 46-year-old suspect was stopped at a police roadblock at about 5.35pm yesterday as part of an operation targeting drug smuggling and other security threats.
The man was travelling in a white Kia sedan with a Malaysian registration plate when he was detained by Sadao police.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah confirmed the arrestand that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had been informed of the case.
A search of the car revaled the rifles, seven 5.56mm magazines; 300 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition;100 rounds of .45 calibre bullets; and 50 rounds of 9mm bullets.
Reports in Thailand's thethaiger.com quoted Police Colonel Surachit Phetchajom saying that further investigation indicated this might be part of a larger international arms trafficking network.
