TAWAU – A man who committed two robberies using a 68cm parang yesterday morning was nabbed after he rode a stolen motorcycle to a police station here to escape a crowd in hot pursuit.
District police chief Peter Umbuas, in a statement, said the 27-year-old suspect was detained at 8.10am, 20 minutes after he robbed a man of a Modenas GT motorcycle in Jalan Tawau Lama.
“The victim asked for help from passers-by to chase the suspect, but the suspect, who had hijacked his motorcycle, managed to evade them until he entered the grounds of the Tawau police station. He was detained with his parang.”
He said the suspect also robbed a man driving a Nissan Frontier in Jalan Tanjung Batu Darat about 7am the same day.
“The suspect escaped with the victim’s vehicle towards Jalan Tawau Lama, but it ran out of fuel at the Jalan Tawau Lama roundabout, forcing the suspect to abandon the vehicle by the roadside.”
He said a remand order will be sought against the suspect under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The suspect was previously detained four times since 2014 for drug abuse, he added. – Bernama, December 26, 2020
