A WOMAN was charged at the Ipoh Magistrates’ Court on Monday with using criminal force against the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, during the state-level National Day celebration on 31 August 2025.

Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, 41, allegedly committed the offence at 8:20 am outside the Ipoh Town Hall, in an incident that saw her run toward the Sultan during the playing of the state anthem.

She was charged under Section 352 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to three months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani requested that no plea be recorded, as preliminary assessments indicated the accused was suffering from schizophrenia at the time of arrest. Further evaluation under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Mental Health Act 2001 was requested to determine her mental fitness.

Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan ordered the accused to undergo a one-month psychiatric assessment at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta. No bail was granted, and the case has been set for mention on 8 October.

The woman was previously reported to have a history of psychiatric treatment and past drug-related offences. - Sept 8, 2025
