KOTA KINABALU – Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan today expressed hope that the state will get a better deal than Sarawak from Petronas.
While it is expected that the Sabah government will meet the national oil firm, he said no date has been scheduled, but expects the meeting to be held next year.
“We expect no less than what Sarawak is getting in its special deal with Petronas. We expect no less. So, more would be better,” said the Keningau MP in Putatan today.
Sarawak and Petronas have settled out of court after the state sued over the company’s refusal to pay a sales tax on petroleum products.
The settlement establishes a framework for the state to be more actively involved in oil and gas activities through Petroleum Sarawak Bhd.
Sabah, under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah administration, is also demanding a special agreement with Petronas.
At the recently concluded state assembly sitting, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Md Noor confirmed that a meeting will be arranged between the state government and Petronas.
This comes after Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin agreed that Sabah should get a deal similar to Sarawak’s. – The Vibes, December 26, 2020
