A TWO-MONTH-OLD baby girl died from suffocation after she was accidentally smothered by her mother while sleeping in the same bed, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

Perak Tengah District Police Chief, Superintendent Hafezul Helmi Hamzah, said police received a report of the incident, which occurred at a house in Jalan Sungai Jejawi, Kampung Sungai Dua Kota Setia, at around 8.45am on Thursday.

The baby was pronounced dead at Hospital Seri Manjung and later transferred to the Forensic Department at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun for a post-mortem examination.

“The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was brain swelling and pulmonary oedema due to compression,” Hafezul Helmi said in a statement.

“Investigations found that the baby suffocated while sleeping next to the suspect, who is her biological mother, on the same bed,” he added.

The 35-year-old woman has been arrested, and police are investigating the case under Section 33 of the Child Act 2001. She is expected to be charged on Monday under Section 304A of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence. - September 20, 2025
