A 24-year-old public university student pleaded guilty to transmitting sexually explicit content, with the court warning of prison time if the fine goes unpaid
A UNIVERSITY student was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here today after admitting to uploading and initiating the transmission of a sexually explicit video via his personal account on the social media platform X.
Muhammad Aidil Akmal Azhar, 24, pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to him by the court interpreter. Judge Suhaila Haron handed down the sentence and ordered that the accused serve four months in prison should he fail to pay the fine.
According to the charge, the accused had “knowingly created and initiated the transmission of obscene communication in the form of a video with the intent to annoy others”* using the X application at approximately 10.45 p.m. on 1 March 2024 in Shah Alam.
The content in question was subsequently viewed at a condominium in Shah Alam at 11 a.m. on 4 April 2024. The offence falls under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and is punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act.
Deputy Public Prosecutor for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Fadhli Ab Wahab, urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence, highlighting the gravity of sexually explicit material being disseminated on social media.
“The impact of obscene content online on national values and public morality is a serious concern,” he said.
Counsel Nurshah Kamarudin, representing the accused, appealed for a lenient sentence on the grounds that her client had no previous convictions, had shown remorse, and had vowed not to repeat the offence.
“My client is deeply regretful and has learnt from this experience,” she told the court. - September 25, 2025
