SELANGOR police have announced renewed efforts to intensify operations against drunk driving and illegal street racing, with a stern warning to road users to abide by traffic laws or face uncompromising legal action.
State Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said a key focus will be placed on the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), which represents the public face of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) on the roads.
“All officers must uphold discipline, integrity, professionalism, and maintain a people-friendly approach while maximising the use of modern technology,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
He noted that as of August this year, the number of road accidents involving police personnel had dropped by 26.09 per cent to 34 cases, compared to 46 cases in 2024.
“Operations against drunk drivers, illegal racers, and reckless road users must be intensified, alongside strengthening educational and preventive programmes,” he added.
Shazeli underscored the serious stance taken by Selangor police on traffic incidents, particularly those involving road gangs and cases stemming from individual negligence.
Several known hotspots for illegal racing have already been identified by JSPT Selangor, and enforcement measures are underway.
“The safety and order in Selangor is a result of teamwork across all police departments. The public is urged to obey traffic laws and avoid involvement in any criminal activity. The police will not compromise on matters that disrupt public peace,” he said.
Meanwhile, in a related incident in Melaka earlier on Thursday, a pickup driver believed to have been intoxicated lost control of his vehicle, ploughing into five other cars at a traffic junction in Cheng.
The crash, which occurred around 7.30am on the Lebuh Alor Gajah–Melaka–Jasin (AMJ) highway, left six individuals with minor injuries. All were rushed to Melaka Hospital for treatment.
Melaka Tengah District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, said preliminary investigations showed the Mitsubishi Triton was heading towards Cheng from Bandar Melaka when it struck a road divider and veered into oncoming traffic.
“The vehicle then crashed into two BMWs, a Perodua Axia, a Perodua Myvi, and a Nissan Almera. Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causing injury or death.
A full report is pending as victims continue receiving medical care. Images and videos of the incident have since circulated widely on social media, showing the moment, the out-of-control pickup slammed into the stationary vehicles at the traffic light. - September 25, 2025
