A LOCAL woman has lost RM301,000 in an elaborate phone scam involving a man posing as a police officer, according to a statement issued today by Batu Pahat District Police Chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani.

The 59-year-old woman first received a phone call on 14 May from an individual claiming to be a member of the police force.

"The suspect alleged the victim was involved in a money laundering case and would be arrested unless she cooperated," ACP Shahrulanuar said. The woman was then instructed to disclose her bank account details and to transfer funds to various accounts, purportedly for a Bank Negara Malaysia investigation.

Between 20 May and 25 September, the victim made a series of payments into 17 different bank accounts, amounting to a total of RM301,000.

"She was later asked to make an additional payment, but refused after suspecting she had been scammed," he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a potential prison sentence upon conviction.

ACP Shahrulanuar urged the public to exercise greater caution when receiving unsolicited calls, particularly from unknown numbers. He also advised verifying the identity of callers and claims through proper official channels. - September 27, 2025
