A 19-YEAR-old Malaysian teenager was detained on Thursday afternoon for attempting to smuggle 8.9 kilogrammes of cannabis into Macau.

Reports in The Macau Post said the teenager was arrested by police at the Macau International Airport with the drugs seized having an estimated street value of nine million patacas (about RM5m).

The teenager was reportedly hired by a gang to smuggle the cannabis from Bangkok to the intended final destination of Hong Kong.

He first flew from Bangkok to South Korea, from there he flew to Macau on Thursday afternoon.

He then intended to travel to Hong Kong, but was caught by police at the airport.

The Macau Post said police suspected that someone on the flight from South Korea to Macau was smuggling drugs, based on intelligence that they had gathered.

After the flight arrived in Macau at 2pm, police intercepted the Malaysian when he collecting his luggage, in which they found 16 bags of cannabis buds weighing 8.9 kilogrammes in total.

According to reports, the teenager had been promised RM5,000 provided he succeeded in smuggling the cannabis buds to Hong Kong.

Police said they are investigating the origin of the cannabis buds and tracing others involved in the case.

The suspect will be transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further questioning and face a drug trafficking charge. - September 27, 2025
