A MAGISTRATE’S Court in Ipoh has rejected the guilty plea of a woman accused of attempting to assault the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, during the state-level National Day celebrations on 31 August, following confirmation that she was not of sound mind at the time of the incident.
Magistrate Harith Mazlan made the ruling on Wednesday after the prosecution informed the court that the accused, Nurshazwani Afni Mohamad Zorki, 41, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, a psychiatric report from Hospital Bahagia Tanjung Rambutan in Ulu Kinta confirmed the mental health condition but deemed the accused fit to stand trial.
"Currently, the accused has received treatment and is in stable condition. She is fit to stand trial and present her defence," Nasrul Hadi told the court during the re-mention of the case.
Nurshazwani Afni is charged under Section 352 of the Penal Code for using criminal force against the Sultan. The alleged offence took place at the grandstand in front of the Ipoh City Council building on Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab at approximately 8 am on National Day. The charge carries a maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both.
The court granted bail of RM10,000 with two local sureties and ordered the accused to report monthly to the Ipoh district police headquarters. The matter has been fixed for further mention and the appointment of legal representation on 8 December.
Nurshazwani was initially charged on 8 September but no plea was recorded at the time. The court had instead ordered a month-long psychiatric assessment under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code. - October 9, 2025
