MORE than 90,000 Malaysians have secured housing loans worth RM21.5 billion under the Skim Jaminan Kredit Perumahan (SJKP), as the government intensifies efforts to improve home ownership among lower- and middle-income earners, particularly the young.
Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu, told Parliament today that 90,779 financing applications have been approved under the scheme to date, with nearly 90 percent granted to applicants aged 40 and below.
Of that figure, around 15,000 were aged between 18 and 25, while 31,000 were between 26 and 30. Another 22,356 applicants were aged 31 to 35, and 12,799 were between 36 and 40.
“Under the Budget recently tabled by the Prime Minister, an additional RM20 billion has been allocated for SJKP under the MADANI Government. This is certainly welcome news for the people, once the budget receives parliamentary approval,” she said during the oral question session in the Dewan Rakyat.
Responding to a follow-up from Shah Alam MP Azli Yusof, who asked how the government was supporting home ownership for individuals without fixed incomes, Aiman Athirah reiterated the administration’s commitment to gig workers and the self-employed.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced during the tabling of Budget 2026 last Friday that the SJKP scheme would be expanded to benefit an additional 80,000 first-time homebuyers, with the total guarantee ceiling doubled from RM10 billion to RM20 billion.
In addition to SJKP, Aiman Athirah noted that the government is also implementing other initiatives to support low-income earners, including rent-to-own schemes under the People’s Housing Project (PPR) and the Residensi Rakyat Programme managed by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. - October 13, 2025
