PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) Sabah has outlined three key criteria in its selection process for candidates in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17), prioritising integrity, moral character, and strong grassroots engagement.

Vice Chairman of PN Sabah, Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan, said the coalition is committed to fielding candidates who embody these values as a foundation for clean and competent governance.

“PN Sabah is committed to presenting only the best candidates—those who are competent, ethical, and grounded in the people’s struggles.

“These traits are crucial for producing elected representatives who are clean, free from corruption, and capable of carrying out their responsibilities effectively,” Aliakbar said in a statement following the Election Commission’s announcement of polling day for PRN17.

The election is set for 29 November 2025, with nominations on 15 November and early voting scheduled for 25 November.

Aliakbar, who previously served as an appointed assemblyman in the 16th Sabah State Assembly, is expected to contest the Karambunai seat under the PN banner.

He is likely to face incumbent Datuk Yakub Khan of Barisan Nasional (BN) and former Karambunai assemblyman Azhar Matussin, who is expected to be re-nominated by Parti Warisan.

PN Sabah Chairman and Beluran MP, Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee, is also reported to be eyeing the Sugut seat, where he is expected to challenge incumbent Datuk James Ratib, Sabah’s Minister of Community Development and People’s Wellbeing.

Despite holding only one appointed seat in the previous state assembly, PN has set its sights on contesting 36 of the 73 seats available in PRN17, according to earlier remarks by PN Chief Whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

Aliakbar, who is also the PAS Sabah Commissioner, reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the PN coalition and its campaign in the state election.

“PAS Sabah remains steadfast in working with our coalition partners in PN to champion justice, administrative integrity, and the welfare of the people of Sabah,” he said.

He added that PAS and PN election machinery are prepared to face PRN17 with discipline, determination and a strong sense of purpose. - October 17, 2025
