THE Kelantan Customs Department seized 47 luxury vehicles of various types and brands brought in without tax and valid documents, worth more than RM6.2 million including tax, from January to October 16.

Its director, Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long, said the seizure was carried out following raids in Kelantan, Johor and Kuala Lumpur, involving vehicles parked in public parking lots and condominiums before they were believed to be distributed to customers.

He said that all seizures were carried out based on public information, in addition to investigations which revealed that the syndicate was actively selling luxury vehicles using various methods including promotion via social media.

“Among the vehicles seized were a Volkswagen Beetle, Volvo S80, BMW 325i, Maserati Ghibli, Honda Jazz, Toyota Vellfire and Mercedes Benz worth between RM50,000 and RM185,000.

“This car smuggling syndicate also offered to sell vehicles at discounted prices between 35 and 40 percent cheaper than the market price to attract local buyers,” he told a press conference at the Kota Bharu enforcement office, today.

Wan Jamal Abdul Salam said the syndicate is believed to be bringing in vehicles that have been disposed of in neighbouring countries and storing them around Johor Bahru before distributing them in the local market.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which, if convicted, can result in a fine or imprisonment, or both. - October 21, 2025
